What Does Dyslexia look like?

If you notice some of these characteristics, your child may being showing signs of Dyslexia. 

Difficulty with Oral Language

  • Could be late in learning to talk

  • May have difficulty pronouncing words

  • Might have difficulty assimilation new vocabulary

  • May not follow directions well

  • Could experience confusion with directional words ie. "right, left, before, after"

  • Might struggles to learn the alphabet, nursery rhymes, or songs

  • Could struggle to understand concepts and relationships

Difficulty with Reading

  • May have a difficult time learning to read in a classroom setting

  • May have challenges recognizing and being able to produce rhyming words or counting syllables in words (Phonological Awareness)

  • Has a challenging time with hearing between different sounds in words (Auditory Discrimination)

  • May have trouble learning the sounds of letters

  • May have a challenge remembering names and/or the order of letters when reading

  • May reverse letters or the order of letters when reading

  • Might misread or omit common little words

  • Could stumble through longer words

  • Reading comprehension suffers during oral or silent reading

  • Oral reading is slow and laborious

Difficulty with Written Language

  • Might have trouble putting ideas on paper

  • Might have trouble spelling

  • Might have challenges editing writing
